Professor Jan L Wennström, Gothenburg, has died, 74 years old. He leaves behind his wife Angela and daughter Rebecka with family. He was a much appreciated and respected colleague, both nationally and internationally. Jan graduated as a dentist in Gothenburg in 1972 and became a specialist in periodontology in 1983. Early in his career, he completed his doctoral studies at the National Institute of Dental Research at NIH, Bethesda in the USA. He defended his dissertation in Gothenburg in 1982 on the dissertation "Keratinized and attached gingiva: regenerative potential and significance for periodontal health" and became an associate professor in 1986 at the University of Gothenburg. From 2000 to 2014, he was head of the Department of Periodontology at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. He has an extensive scientific production, which in recent years has come to include periimplantitis. Jan Wennström has been presented a number of awards both nationally and internationally. He was a board member and President of the Scandinavian Society of Periodontology and President of the Periodontal Research Group of IADR. Both in the past and now in recent years, he has been very active in developing the basis for the new national guidelines for dental care in Sweden and he represented periodontology in the Swedish National Quality Register SkaPa. We have lost a friend and a colleague who always generously shared his unimaginably extensive detailed knowledge of dentistry at large and specifically periodontology.
